Excellent summary of the battle. I've read a lot about Stone's River, had family in the battle. This is concise without being general. It avoids the sin of analyzing the personalities of the generals, while giving enough details to know why actions were taken and why the responses on both sides were as they were. It's not just the biggest guns or the most men. Strategy is revealed during the events of the battle.

This was an interesting summary. Maps would have been very helpful.
I can see the author's point about this being the turning point of the war but I am not sure I agree.
I liked this book because I have walked areas of this battlefield, and the author describes the action and battlefield with such clarity that you can picture the placement of troops during the battle
Good book. Read at first sitting. Unsure about historical accuracy.
Detailed information on an important part of the CW, but a part that depending upon your point of view and interest may be one that you have not spent a lot time considering.
If you are a student of the CW this is information that will expand your grasp. If you a reader of CW topics this will add an insight that will add to your insight and you can determine how far to take it.
This was written in the 19- teens and rather overzealous on its claim of being the turning point of the war. I did like how it considered the international ramifications of the Civil War, though gave more credit to this battle than the Emancipation Proclamation for foreign power's decision not to help the Confederacy. Still, a good book to read on the 153rd anniversary of the battle.
This is a classic book, describing an important part of the U.S. Civil War, the campaign for control of Middle Tennessee. In contrast to the poor leadership given the Army of the Potomac, the Union's best and for some reason most under-rated generals practiced their trade in Tennessee. Consider the accomplishments of Rosecrans, and probably the best Union general of the war, Thomas, in destroying entire Confederate armies. Stones River was a pivotal battle in the war, and this is a good description of it.
This book is very good, but, I don;t think it was a real turning point in the war.True, the Union was hard up for a victory, they were in a real crisis. They had suffered a series of defeats or drawn battles, and this close victory revived there public morale and stock. But, no matter how bad off I don't think that LIncoln would have ever given up. Stones River was a very bloody fight and both sides were unable to fight for several months.
One outcome of the battle was the proven combat fighting spirit of General Rosecrans. He was a real fighter at Stones RIver. Sadly, Jeff Davis had a strong confident opinion of General Bragg that was often questioned. Yet, he never relieved him till the final year of the war. His long time support of the dour pessimist Bragg was a big plum for the Union. As long as the loser Bragg was in command the Union felt like they could always beat him.
Everyone should read this book.
